Vol. 370 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Museums.

38.

asked the Taoiseach the steps he proposes to take to ensure the return of historical treasures which are currently in basements and cellars in the National Museum to suitable local museums in their areas of origin; if he will ensure that the Enniscorthy museum is furnished with different treasures which are currently on display in Dublin and which would be a major tourism benefit to County Wexford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is already the policy of the National Museum of Ireland to make available relevant material and objects of local interest to suitable museums and heritage centres. For instance, a replica of the Enniscorthy brooch was provided to the Enniscorthy Museum and display material relating to local antiquities was also provided. I have asked the National Museum to continue to endeavour to facilitate local museums, including that at Enniscorthy, by loaning material subject, of course, to the overriding need to ensure the safety of the material.
