Vol. 370 No. 5

Written Answers. - Potato Imports.

140.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the large quantities of potatoes being imported into the Republic of Ireland through the port of Larne, County Antrim, and thereafter coming through the Customs and Excise post in Dundalk; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Potato imports from Britain for the three months ended 31 October are estimated at 2,900 tonnes compared with 2,000 tonnes for the same period in 1985.

Under EC rules there is free trade in potatoes between the member states, subject to observance of phytosanitary controls.
