Vol. 370 No. 7

Written Answers. - Education Grants.

80.

asked the Minister for Education the arrangements which have been made under the European Action Programme for the Mobility of University Students to make third level higher education grants available to Irish students who wish to further their studies in EC countries.

Ireland fully supported the actions and level of funding proposed by the Commission of the European Communities in the Erasmus Programme which is a major initiative to promote the mobility of university students.

A Council of Education Ministers held in Brussels on 28 November gave the proposal long and detailed examination. It was not possible, however, in the light of all the circumstances involved, to arrive at a decision to adopt the proposal from the Commission.

The Council instructed the Committee of Permanent Representives to pursue the examination of this matter.
