Vol. 370 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Lough Sheelin Fish Catches.

19.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he is satisfied that there has been no reduction in the level of fish catches in Lough Sheelin in 1986; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been no serious reduction in the number of fish caught in Lough Sheelin in 1986. The level of reported catches fluctuates from year to year. According to anglers' returns, the number of fish caught in the years 1984, 1985 and 1986 were 1,299, 1,538 and 1,123 respectively.

Is the Minister aware of the concern among anglers at the deterioration in the condition of the lake which was admitted by the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment? Will the Minister say whether his Department have any role to play in the prevention or control of pollution in Lough Sheelin?

I am aware there has been a certain amount of concern expressed about Lough Sheelin and the fish catches there but I have to say that the figures I have just given indicate there has not been a great fluctuation between the years 1984 and 1986. There was an increase in 1985. The earlier part of this year showed encouraging results but the latter part has not been quite so encouraging. As the Deputy knows, primary responsibility for water pollution control rests with local authorities under the provisions of the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act, 1977. In the case of Lough Sheelin that control rests with Cavan County Council who, as the Deputy may be aware, have two representatives, one of whom is the chairman of the Lough Sheelin management committee, and who have issued section 12 notices to various individuals.

Will the Minister say whether his Department have any role to play in the prevention of pollution?

The Deputy must be aware that the fisheries boards have control in their functional areas. The Department have no control in that respect; any control is carried out by the fisheries boards of the various areas.
