Vol. 370 No. 9

Written Answers. - Smarmore Castle (Louth) Swimming Pool.

134.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will grant-aid the swimming pool amenity at Smarmore Castle, Ardee, County Louth; if he is aware that this amenity is open all times to the public, schools, sports clubs, etc.; that there is no public local authority pool in the general area of Ardee; if he will agree to provide this amenity via the Ardee Town Commissioners in view of the high cost involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under section 55 of the Local Government Act, 1955, sanitary authorities are empowered, with the consent of the Minister for the Environment, to contribute to the funds of a body providing swimming facilities. I understand that Louth County Council will shortly be considering the allocation of a grant to the swimming pool at Smarmore Castle. Any application for my consent to such a grant and any application for approval to the raising of a loan in relation to the pool will receive sympathetic consideration.
