asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the number of foreign vessels that have been apprehended fishing illegally in Irish waters during 1986; the nationality of each vessel; and the fine imposed.

A total of 30 foreign vessels have been apprehended during 1986 (to date); of these 22 were Spanish, five British and three Dutch.

The masters of six Spanish vessels have been convicted and penalties totalling £195,601.05 imposed. Three vessels were not prosecuted due to lack of evidence and 21 cases remain before the courts.
