Vol. 370 No. 10

Written Answers. - Extradition Agreements.

23.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will list the countries with which Ireland at present has bilateral agreements on extradition.

The majority of Ireland's extradition arrangements arise out of the multilateral Council of Europe Convention, the European Convention on Extradition, 1957.

A Treaty on Extradition concluded between Ireland and the United States of America was the subject of challenge in the Supreme Court. The motion "that Dáil Éireann approves the terms of the Treaty on Extradition between Ireland and the United States of America signed in Washington on 13 July 1983" was agreed by the Dáil on 25 November 1986. A new Government order applying the relevant provisions of the Extradition Act, 1965, to the United States is now necessary.

Under the same Act, and on the basis that reciprocal facilities will be afforded by Australia for the surrender of persons wanted for prosecution or punishment in Ireland, the Government made an order applying the relevant provisions of the Act to Australia.
