Vol. 370 No. 10

Written Answers. - Seizure of Camera.

79.

asked the Minister for Finance if duty is paid in full on a camera seized at Dublin Airport on the 19 October, 1986, from a person (details supplied) in County Offaly by customs officials; and if the camera will be returned to him.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that on 20 October, 1986 the person in question was offered release of the camera on payment of a deposit of £135 pending final determination of the case. This offer has not been availed of to date.

By failing to declare the camera on importation at Dublin Airport, the person in question rendered himself liable to prosecution under the Customs Acts and the camera liable to forfeiture. The Commissioners, however, have now decided to release the camera on payment of a compromise sum of £135 in lieu of legal proceedings. This amount takes into consideration the import charges of £74.37 payable on the camera.
