Vol. 370 No. 10

Written Answers. - Farmers European Currency Aid.

104.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the amount of the £35 million pounds of European currency money that was made available for farmers to diversify into production of products that were not in surplus; and the amount of this money which has been taken up to-date and for what areas of production.

Under the exchange rate guarantee scheme for new agricultural development purposes the Government have provided £35 million in EMS currencies for onlending to farmers. The purposes of this scheme include development of non-surplus products such as sheep, protein crops and vegetables; farming activities which, although non-land-using, can supplement income and provide employment for farm families; diversification into "minority" activities such as horses — hunters and ponies — or deer farming. The scheme is operated by the four associated banks and the ACC. It is understood that approximately £10 million has been credited by these institutions to farmers' accounts to date.
