Vol. 370 No. 10

Written Answers. - AnCO Workshops.

113.

asked the Minister for Labour if in view of the high youth unemployment rate in Enniscorthy town, he is prepared to sanction a permanent AnCO training workshop for the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

114.

asked the Minister for Labour if in view of the success of AnCO in relation to running training workshops in Enniscorthy, he will ask AnCO to extend the present workshop at Templeshannon quay for a further period.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 113 and 114 together.

Normal policy in relation to permanent community training workshops is to provide them only in towns whose population is more than 9,000. For towns like Enniscorthy with populations of less than 9,000, AnCO provide interventions such as temporary community training workshops.

The temporary workshop in Enniscorthy was initially approved in 1985. Its duration has already been extended twice because of the number of young people in the area who were entitled to training under the social guarantee for youth, primarily early school-leavers with no qualifications.

An overall review of the provision of community training workshops has been undertaken by AnCO and the Youth Employment Agency. The aim of the review is to ensure an equitable distribution of such training places having regard to both the level of finance available and the demand for such places from unemployed unqualified school leavers. While a final decision has not yet been taken, the limitations on funding and the needs of other parts of County Wexford and south-east region for such intervention will naturally influence the decision on the future of the workshop in Enniscorthy.
