Vol. 370 No. 13

Written Answers. - Customs Patrol Service.

163.

asked the Minister for Finance the action he proposes to take in regard to the replacement of 12 Ford Granada 2.3 litre patrol cars supplied to the Customs & Excise mobile patrol service on the land frontier in 1984-85, and out of service because of a suspected braking defect since February- March 1985; and the reason for the delay of almost two years to date in resolving the problem.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that, following extensive testing by experts employed by the Department of the Environment, the Department of Defence, the suppliers and by independent consultants, they have under consideration at present the suitable modification of all 12 Granadas for Customs & Excise patrol work.

The reason for the delay has been the extensive investigation necessary and the lack of agreement among the various experts on the nature, seriousness and potential remedies of the suspected braking defect.

164.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of replacement vehicles which have been provided to the Customs and Excise mobile patrol service on the land frontier in 1986; and the number of vehicles he intends providing in 1987 in accordance with existing agreements.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that 17 new vehicles were brought into Customs and Excise use on the land frontier during 1986. It is intended to provide a further twelve vehicles in 1987.
