Vol. 370 No. 13

Written Answers. - United Nations Special Representative's Mandate.

33.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware of moves at the United Nations to suppress the mandate of the United Nations Special Representative for investigation into human rights abuses in EI Salvador; if he will ensure that the Irish representative at the United Nations will oppose any such move; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A draft resolution tabled at the current session of the UN General Assembly would, inter alia, have requested the Commission on Human Rights to consider the possibility of terminating the mandate of the Commission's Special Representative on Human Rights in EI Salvador. However, this draft was withdrawn and the resolution adopted by the Assembly, for which Ireland voted, provides that the Special Representative will continue to monitor the human rights situation in that country.
