Vol. 370 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Televising of Dáil Proceedings.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he considers that the televising of Dáil proceedings would enhance interest in, and awareness of, our democratic institutions; if any plans have been considered by the Government in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Dún Laoghaire): There are no proposals at present for the televising of Dáil proceedings. As the Deputy will appreciate, this is primarily a matter for the Committee on Procedure and Privileges.

The Deputy will also be aware that the broadcasting of Dáil proceedings on radio has only recently been introduced. While I personally favour the introduction of televised coverage in some form, this is a matter which should be considered at a later date, when the House has more experience of radio broadcasting.

In view of the fact that this is the era of telecommunications and that parliaments of our size, such as the Knesset, already have televised proceedings and that Irish people can see the proceedings of the British House of Lords on television each evening, will the Minister raise with the Committee on Procedure and Privileges or the Department — whichever is more appropriate — the question of introducing televised proceedings of the Dáil, perhaps starting with Question Time?

(Dún Laoghaire): As I said, I favour the introduction of televised coverage in some form. However, we must be realistic in view of the fact that we have just commenced radio broadcasting. We need the agreement of all sides of the House to introduce a change of this nature but I will be pleased to initiate inquiries through the party structures and the Committee on Procedure and Privileges to see if there is agreement to have this done.

I thank the Minister for his reply. Will the Minister consider asking the committee to ensure that broadcasting — unlike the House of Lords — will take place at a time when school children will see it so that it will enhance their interest in upholding our democratic institutions?

(Dún Laoghaire): I take the Deputy's point.
