Vol. 370 No. 14

Written Answers. - 1987 Household Budget Survey.

23.

asked the Taoiseach in relation to applications for positions as temporary full time household interviewers on the 1987 budget survey, (1) the number of applications which were received; (2) the number who were interviewed; (3) the number who were appointed; (4) of those appointed, the number who were on the live register of unemployed immediately before appointment; and (5) the reason the competition was not held under the aegis of the Civil Service Commission.

Thirty temporary household interviewer posts for the 1987 household budget survey were advertised on 22 October 1986. A total of 1,845 applications were received by the specified closing date of 7 November 1986. Some 308 eligible applicants were subsequently called for interview. Interviews were held between the first and the ninth of this month. Appointments will be made shortly and in doing this preference will be given, as specified in the regulations, to qualified candidates who are unemployed. While due account must be taken of geographic location a preliminary assessment of interview results indicates that the majority of candidates who will be offered appointment are currently on the live register of unemployed.

The appointments are being made under an exclusion order under section 5 of the Civil Service Commissioners Act, 1956. Such temporary appointments are normally made by the Department or office concerned and not by the Civil Service Commission.
