asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there are any proposals to have more bovine animal hides processed in this country in view of the massive exports of unprocessed hides at present.

Limerick East): There is a proposal, for which the Industrial Development Authority has approved grant assistance, to reopen on a phased basis tannery plants formerly operated by the Irish Leathers Group in the south-east region.

The Authority are continually attempting to identify further leather processors, in Ireland or overseas, who possess the necessary background and ability to establish new projects in leather manufacturing in Ireland.
