Vol. 370 No. 15

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Payments.

125.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment assistance is not being paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick.

The person concerned claimed unemployment assistance from 17 September 1986 and his papers were referred to the social welfare officer for investigation of his means.

When the inquiries in the matter are completed the case will be submitted to a deciding officer for assessment of means. His entitlement to unemployment assistance will then be reviewed in the light of this assessment.

While every effort is being made to process claims with the minimum of delay, nevertheless, due to the large volume of claims received in the Department, there is an inevitable delay in some cases. Delays are most likely to arise where means testing is involved as in this particular case, where the social welfare officer must visit the claimant's home to investigate the means.

126.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of (a) men and (b) women in receipt of (a) unemployment benefit and (b) unemployment assistance in each of the following areas in North County Dublin: Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk, Swords, Donabate, Portrane, Malahide, Portmarnock, Garristown, Rolestown, Oldtown, Ballyboughal and Naul.

Statistics are not available for the areas mentioned by the Deputy with the exception of Balbriggan. On 28 November 1986, the latest date for which figures are available, the position was as follows:—
