Vol. 370 No. 15

Written Answers. - Overloading of Trucks.

168.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give an up to date response on comments made by the Irish Road Haulage Association in relation to the general ignoring of weighbridges and the overloading by hauliers of trucks in obvious contravention of the law.

I am aware of the views of the Irish Road Haulage Association concerning the enforcement of road traffic legislation that is relevant to the road haulage industry, particularly that relating to the enforcement of weight regulations.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the enforcement of the law in this area is receiving appropriate attention, having regard to the many demands on the Force at the present time. I am informed that in the period from March to September last prosecutions have been brought in 367 cases in respect of overweight vehicle offences.
