Vol. 370 No. 15

Written Answers. - Army Conditions.

88.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is considering the possibility of improving the living conditions and working conditions, equipment and pay in the accommodation provided for Army personnel and their families in the Dublin Central constituency.

The question of improving the general conditions, including accommodation and equipment for Army personnel in the Dublin Central Constituency area, is kept under continual review and improvements are regularly effected within the limits of the resources available for this purpose. Likewise, married quarters, such as McKee Park where extensive refurbishment is at present being carried out, are renovated as necessary.

As regards pay, the benefit of the first phase (3 per cent) of the increase under the public service pay agreement was applied to the pay of all ranks of the Defence Forces with effect from 1 May 1986. The second phase (2 per cent) will be added to basic pay with effect from 1 January 1987. The terms of the agreement also provide for a third phase (2 per cent) with effect from 1 May 1987.
