Vol. 370 No. 15

Written Answers. - Mariculture at Smerwick Harbour.

90.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he studied a petition signed by over 2,000 people regarding mariculture at Smerwick Harbour, Ballydavid, County Kerry, which was handed to him by Deputy Begley and which states that lives could be lost if the development goes ahead; if he is now in a position to make a decision on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Minister of State Deputy John Donnellan, received the petition in question on 9 December 1986.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, a public inquiry was held on 16 September last on the proposal to designate Smerwick Harbour as an area within which it would be lawful to engage in aquaculture, subject to licences issued by me. Anybody who wished to object to the proposed designation had therefore an opportunity of doing so at that inquiry.

I am currently considering the report of the inquiry together with all other representations made to me and will announce my decision on the matter as soon as possible.
