Question declared carried.

Now that the issue has been decided I would like on my behalf and on behalf of my party to congratulate Deputy Tunney on his election. I assure him, as we have assured the Ceann Comhairle, of our co-operation in maintaining the good order of the House at all times.

Is main liomsa mo bhuíochas a chur in iúl don Teach seo as ucht mé a cheapadh don tríú huair mar Leas-Cheann Comhairle. Glacaimse mar onóir mhór é. Glacaim mar ghradam mór é agus glacaim freisin go bhfuil dualgais mhóra ormsa dá bharr. Tá mé ag súil amach anseo, mar scoláire nó mar mhúinteoir, gur fhoghlaimíos ó na huaireanta a bhí mé anseo cheana agus ó aon fhaillí a rinne mé sna dualgais a chomhlíonadh agus go ndéanfaidh mé mo dhícheall a bheith cóir agus ceart chomh fada agus a bhaineann sé le bunrialacha an Tí seo.

Ar ndóigh, caithfidh mé comhbhrón a dhéanamh don tríú huair leis an Teachta Paddy Harte. Ach sin mar a bhíonn. Tá mé cinnte go ndearna sé a dhícheall, ach déarfaidh mé leis má bhíonn a leithéid de seo ann arís go mb'fhéidir nach mbeidh mise san iomaíocht. B'fhéidir go dtabharfaidh sé sin roinnt mhisnigh dó.

Is mian liom buíochas a ghabháil as ucht na bhfocal comhghairdis a tháinig ón Teachta Alan Dukes, ceannasaí nua an Fhreasúra. Arís ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas a dhéanamh leis sin de bhrí gur éirigh leis bheith in a cheannaire ar Pháirtí Fhine Gael agus beidh mé ag súil leis an gcomhoibriú ata geallta aige don Chathaoir amach anseo.

Arís, mo bhuíochas don Teach, mo bhuíochas do gach Ball anseo, agus beidh mé ag súil le comhoibriú ó na Teachtaí go léir.

I sincerely thank the House for having elected me for the third occasion as Leas-Cheann Comhairle. I am mindful of the important duties that fall upon that great office. I am mindful of the honour, and I pledge to the House that I will carry out those duties as impartially and as correctly as I can. Go raibh maith agaibh ar fad.

I join with the leader of my party in congratulating Deputy Tunney on his election as Leas-Cheann Comhairle and I wish him good luck and good guidance in the duties that he will be called upon to perform. Getting up to do this for Deputy Tunney is becoming a kind of habit with me, but we understand the position and I sincerely wish him every success. I thank the members of the Labour Party and the Progressive Democrat Party for their support and I acknowledge the position in which The Workers' Party found themselves and the position in which Deputy Gregory found himself and I accept there is nothing personal in the decision they took. I would have liked if they had voted for me but that was their decision and I respect it. I wish Deputy Tunney every success.

I, too, on behalf of the Progressive Democrats, join in congratulating Deputy Tunney on his election as Leas-Cheann Comhairle. I wish him well in that office and assure him of our co-operation at all times.
