Vol. 371 No. 5

Written Answers. - U.S. Immigration Clearance Service.

13.

asked the Minister for Communications if the United States immigration clearance service at Shannon Airport will be restored in 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Negotiations between the Irish and US authorities are expected to take place in the near future regarding the recommencement of US immigration preinspection at Shannon Airport on a permanent basis. The trial period of preinspection which ended on 31 October 1986 was very successful and the US authorities have been informed that Ireland is anxious to have preinspection recommenced on a permanent basis as soon as possible. In the course of the forthcoming discussions with the US authorities, my Department will be emphasising the need to have preinspection recommenced in Shannon this year.
