Vol. 371 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Membership Association.

149.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authorities who are participating in the Local Authority Membership Association; the names of the authorities; the cost to each local authority; and if he is satisfied that there is a necessary role for this association as there is already a similar body in the Members of the General Council of County Councils.

I understand that the body known as the Local Authority Members Association was formed by members of local authorities to represent their interests as such members. The association does not represent local authorities and the question of local authority participation does not, therefore, arise. The County Councils General Council, on the other hand, is an association recognised by statute as representing the common interests of county councils. County councils are empowered by law to contribute to the funds of the General Council.
