Vol. 371 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

160.

asked the Minister if he will re-establish a Medical Social Research Bureau-type study and research project to ensure Ireland contributes to international efforts to establish the causes of cot deaths; and if he will extend this research to the entire country.

161.

asked the Minister for Health if he will establish a national cot death register to clearly identify the incidence of, and all facts relating to cot deaths in Ireland.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 160 and 161 together.

I intend raising with the Health Research Board, the question of research into the causes of sudden infant death and the establishment of a national register for the monitoring of sudden infant death syndrome.

The board, which came into operation on 1 January last, is at present reviewing the activities transferred to it from the Medico-Social Research Board and the Medical Research Council to determine its priorities in the light of its resource availability.
