Vol. 371 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bord na Móna Development.

21.

asked the Minister for Energy the plans, if any, he has for the future development of Bord na Móna; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bord na Móna have made a very useful contribution to the economic life of this State since the late thirties. However, the board is faced with short term financial difficulties as a result of the adverse weather conditions in 1985 and 1986. There is now both the task of replacing the board's depleted peat reserves and of endeavouring to rehabilitate their financial position. I am in discussion with the chairman and the board of Bord na Móna and it is my intention that a new chief executive will be appointed by the Government as soon as possible and that a full study of the board's financial situation and its operations will be carried out with a view to improving its efficiency, its products and to sustaining its markets.
