Vol. 371 No. 9

Written Answers. - Tax Offences.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice in respect of each year from 1979 to 1986 inclusive, the number of persons who received and served jail sentences for offences under (a) income tax, (b) corporation tax, (c) value added tax, (d) customs and or excise duties and (e) other taxes or duties.

Statistics of the type requested by the Deputy are not kept by the prison authorities. An attempt to extract such information would entail an examination of a large number of committal warrants (on which the information may not be in a form which would readily identify them as relating to offences of the kind specified by the Deputy) and, accordingly, would involve an inordinate amount of staff time.
