Vol. 371 No. 9

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage.

62.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will indicate the following with regard to arterial drainage: (1) the amount allocated to the different regions for maintenance for 1987; (2) the percentage cutbacks this represents per region; (3) the proposed cutbacks per region in terms of numbers employed in maintenance; (4) the proportionate decrease in the number employed per region this represents; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The amounts allocated for arterial drainage maintenance in the various regions in 1987, together with percentage variances on expenditure in 1986, are as follows:

Region

1987 Allocations£000

% Variance on 1986 Expenditure

East(includingSouth East)

1,192

+ 43.8%

West(includingNorth West

1,487

– 8.5%

South West

821

–3.7%

Total

3,500

+ 5.8%

The effects these allocations will have on employment are being assessed having regard to the fact that the cost of maintenance of the extremely large scheme carried out to the Boyne and of schemes at the Maigue and Corrib-Mask-Robe will be met from the 1987 allocations.
