Vol. 371 No. 9

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

172.

asked the Minister for Education the average pupil-teacher ratio in primary and post-primary schools, respectively, from the most recent date for which figures are available; the comparable figures for 1980; and if she will make a statement indicating the implications of the trend these figures indicate.

The following is the information requested:

Year

Primary

Post-Primary

1980-81

28.8

16.0

1985-86

26.8

17.0

A reduction in the average pupil-teacher ratio has, therefore, been achieved at primary level in this period.

With regard to the increase in the average pupil teacher ratio at post-primary level this derives from the decision in relation to the pupil teacher ratio effective from the commencement of the 1983-84 school year.
