Vol. 372 No. 4

Written Answers. - University for Waterford.

231.

asked the Minister for Education when she received a submission from the Waterford Chamber of Commerce concerning the founding of a university in Waterford; and when she expects to be in a position to make a decision on the matter.

There is no record of such a submission being received in my Department. The previous Minister did, however, receive representations on behalf of the South Eastern Regional Development Organisation in relation to the need for a university type institution in Waterford.

It was pointed out that the matter being raised by the organisation would be one in the first instance for the Higher Education Authority which has a statutory responsibility to maintain a continuous review of the demand and the need for higher education and to advise the Minister for Education on the overall provision of student places to be made within the higher education system.

I understand that the Higher Eduation Authority has had some discussions on this matter with the South Eastern Regional Development Organisation.
