Vol. 372 No. 4

Written Answers. - Football Club Grant Payments.

233.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make a capital grant available for Portlaw association football club who have provided extensive amenities for the youth of the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

234.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make provision for the payment of a capital grant to Tramore association football club who are providing amenities and playing facilities for hundreds of children in the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 233 and 234 together.

In view of limitations on the funds available for the operation of the capital grant scheme for the construction of recreational facilities this year and the need to accord priority to existing commitments, it is not possible to sanction grants in respect of any further projects. My Department has already issued formal notification of the position to applicant bodies, including Tramore association football club. My Department has no record of having received a formal application under the scheme from Portlaw association football club. It should be noted, however, that grants are not paid under the capital grant scheme in respect of works carried out in the absence of prior official approval.
