Vol. 372 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Establishment Level.

5.

asked the Minister for Defence the establishment level for the Defence Forces; the actual levels at the latest date for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): The establishment for the Permanent Defence Force is 17,974 (all ranks). The strength of the force on 31 March 1987 was 13,444 (all ranks).

Will the Minister indicate the last time the Army recruited members on an active basis, how many people are at present awaiting interviews or call-up to the Army and when is it anticipated there will be a new intake of soldiers to the ranks?

(Limerick West): That matter is under consideration at present. It will depend on the budgetary position.

How soon will the Minister be in a position to advise the House and will he be prepared to communicate with me in respect of those matters?

(Limerick West): The matter is under consideration at present and when a decision is made it will be announced in due course.

When was the last time soldiers were recruited to the ranks?

(Limerick West): That information is not available but I would like to remind the Deputy that the Army is never up to full establishment level.
