asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons detained under the Offences Against the State Act; the number of persons charged following arrest under the Offences Against the State Act; the section of the Act under which people were arrested and charged, separately, for the first six months of 1986 and the second six months of 1986, together with the number convicted following detention under the Offences Against the State Act, by the Act under which they were convicted.

The following table sets out the numbers of persons arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, for the periods in question and the numbers of persons arrested under that section who were subsequently charged with an offence:—

The other information sought by the Deputy is not readily available from Garda records and would have to be compiled specially, at the cost of a disproportionate amount of scarce Garda resources.
