Vol. 372 No. 4

Written Answers. - Management of Building Societies.

98.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will initiate an investigation into the fees and other emoluments paid to directors of building societies; if he will investigate in particular the services performed by such directors in return for those fees; if he will investigate the amount of moneys spent by the building societies on advertising, with particular reference to the purposes for which this money is spent, and how this compares with the amount of money spent on advertising by building societies and their equivalents in other countries; if he will publish the results of such investigations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I will be examining all aspects of the operation and management of building societies in preparing major new legislation governing them.

The content of the legislative proposals, when published, will reflect my findings and I do not propose, in the meantime, to publish reports on specific issues.
