Vol. 372 No. 10

Written Answers. - Teachers Salaries.

266.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give for the 1986-87 school year or the most recent year for which figures are available: (a) in secondary schools (i) the number of teachers in receipt of incremental salary and (ii) the number of teachers not in receipt of incremental salary who are (1) full time and (2) part time; (b) in vocational schools (i) the number of teachers in receipt of incremental salary and (ii) the number of teachers not in receipt of incremental salary who are (1) full time and (2) part time; and (c) in community-comprehensive schools (i) the number of teachers in receipt of incremental salary and (ii) the number of teachers not in receipt of incremental salary who are (1) full time and (2) part time.

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the following table:

Type of School

No. of teachers on incremental salary in 1986-87

Secondary

12,061*

Community and Comprehensive

2,315**

Vocational

The information sought is not readily available from my Department's records. See note.***

* Regarding the number of secondary teachers not in receipt of incremental salary, who are full time or part time this information is not available to my Department as secondary schools are private institutions and the employment of such teachers is a matter for the managerial authorities. My Department has allotted 18,612 part time hours in 1986-87 to secondary schools, in exceptional circumstances, but how these hours are distributed amongst part time teachers employed in the schools is a matter for school management.

** This figure represents number of whole time teachers.

*** An allocation of teaching staff is authorised annually by the Department to the 38 Vocational Education Committees on a scheme-wide basis.

The allocation is expressed in whole time teacher equivalent units (i.e. may be utilised in permanent, temporary and part time staff as the VEC decides), and as the teachers are in fact both employed and paid by the individual VECs, the Department does not have an accurate record of the breakdown of staff in the format requested.
