Vol. 372 No. 10

Written Answers. - AIDS Tests.

56.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prisoners who agreed to submit to blood tests in the years 1985 to 1987 inclusive; the number who were found to have the AIDS virus; and the number of prisoners using drugs who did not agree to the blood tests.

During the period in question 994 offenders underwent blood tests to determine whether they were HIV anti-body positive and, of these, 136 were identified as positive. Figures are not available for the numbers of offenders believed to have been abusing drugs prior to committal and who have declined the test.
