Vol. 372 No. 10

Written Answers. - Motor Tax.

151.

asked the Minister for the environment the plans, if any, he has to depart from the existing procedure of collecting motor tax through local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

152.

asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to privatise and or computerise the collection of motor tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

222.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide a service relating to motor tax and the renewal of motor tax in local areas in Waterford, and in particular to towns such as Tramore and Lismore; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 151, 152 and 222 together. On 16 April 1987 I announced the establishment of a working group to report to me on—

(a) the adequacy of existing arrangements for renewing motor tax,

(b) the scope and cost of improving the existing service, and

(c) the effectiveness and cost of possible alternative arrangements.

The general points raised by the Deputies come within the scope of the terms of reference of the group. I do not propose to make any comment on these points pending receipt and examination of the group's report.
