The Department of Communications were established on 2 January 1984 following the assignment of responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the postal and telecommunications services previously carried out by the former Department of Posts and Telegraphs to An Post and Bord Telecom Éireann.
The numbers of persons employed in the Department of Communications at 30 April 1984 to 1987 were:—

Transport and marine functions carried out by the Department of Communications and the staff assigned to them were assigned to other Government Departments on 31 March 1987. The role of each employee is to carry out the tasks assigned to him/her as part of the Department's work of providing advice and support to the Minister in discharging his responsibilities as laid down in statute or otherwise. The cost for each year is shown in the annual Appropriation Account, or where this is not available, in the Estimates for that year.

The number of staff employed in my Department each year since 1980 is set out below. The role of each employee is to carry out the tasks assigned to him as part of the Department's work of providing advice and support to the Minister in discharging his responsibilities. The cost of non industrial staff for each year is shown in the annual Appropriation Account or, where this is not available, in the Estimate for that year. The cost of labour for industrial workers in the Forest and Wildlife Service cannot, within the limited time available, be extracted from the overall cost of forest development and management, but I will communicate this information to the Deputy later.

The cost for each calendar year of the salaries of the civil servants is shown in the annual Appropriation Accounts or, where this is not yet available, is indicated in the Estimate for that year.
The cost of labour for industrial workers and operatives cannot easily be extracted from the overall cost of forest development and management and the Fishery Harbour Centres Fund respectively in the time available. I will furnish the information later.
