The number employed in my Department on 30 April 1987 was 332. This is a reduction from a peak of 382 in 1981. The numbers employed on the same date in the years 1980 to 1986 were as follows:

The range of duties carried out in my Department varies between grades and between individual members of staff in the same grade but the role of each employee is generally to implement Government policy in relation to the health services.
