asked the Minister for Defence the number of persons employed in his Department at 30 April 1987; the role of each employee; the number employed at the same date for the years 1980 to 1986 inclusive; and the total cost of this.

Limerick West): The number of civil servants (established and unestablished) employed in my Department on 30 April in each of the years 1980 to 1987 was as follows: 1980 — 641; 1981 — 660; 1982 — 637; 1983 — 609; 1984 — 629 (increase due to transfer of central purchasing function from the former Department of Posts and Telegraphs); 1985 — 605; 1986 — 585; 1987 — 584.

The total cost for the years 1980 to 1986 was £35,569,171.

The civil servants in the Department advise and assist the Minister and act under his direction and control. In that connection they are engaged in various management, administrative, executive, clerical and other duties.
