Vol. 372 No. 12

Written Answers. - County Tipperary Unemployment.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the serious unemployment situation in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary; the proposals, if any, he has to attract industry there; the steps if any, taken to date; and the results of such steps.

I am aware of the unemployment situation in Carrick-on-Suir and I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that it has in the town a 19 acre serviced site which is being actively promoted for suitable industrial projects.

Last year, following the conclusion of negotiations with the IDA an American Company, Bomont Industries Ltd., established a project in Carrick-on-Suir for the manufacture of plastic film for inked ribbon manufacturers. This company is expected to employ 36 people at full production. In addition, the IDA has recently assisted the establishment of two small industry projects in the town which are projected to employ ten people and have also assisted some of the former workers of the Irish Leathers tannery with a feasibility study into the possibility of re-opening the tannery on a co-operative basis.
