Vol. 372 No. 12

Written Answers. - Grants to Private Institutions.

85.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give a full list of private institutions including hospitals, indicating the level of grant provided through his Department either directly or indirectly; and the total amount of grants paid by health boards to private and voluntary organisations.

The Department of Health do not fund private institutions directly. However, the health boards provide funds to some private institutions towards maintaining certain in-patient services such as the accommodation of elderly persons in private nursing homes.

In addition, the health boards assist certain bodies which provide ancillary health services in the form of grants. Many of these bodies are voluntary organisations and their contribution in the context of the overall provision of health services cannot be over-estimated. Details of the specific institutions and voluntary organisations involved together with details of grants paid can be supplied by the individual health boards.
