Vol. 373 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transition Year.

290.

asked the Minister for Education the decision, if any, the Government have made to allow schools to provide the transition year from September 1987 in view of the fact that the academic year is now ending and schools and parents need to know if any decision has been made as it affects their educational planning; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have already advised the authorities of post primary schools that I am reviewing the provision of transition year courses. In order that more experience may be gained of its operation I have sanctioned transition year courses for the 1987-88 school year in those schools which are currently providing such courses. This decision has enabled transition year programmes to be sanctioned in a total of 74 schools for the 1987-88 school year.
