Vol. 373 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Pushing and Drug Abuse.

55.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to recent reports of increased incidence of drug pushing and drug abuse in the Sheriff Street area, Dublin 1; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda Síochána that there is no evidence of an increase in drug pushing or drug abuse in the area in question. The position is being constantly monitored by the Garda drug unit attached to Store Street station.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the rise in the incidence of drug abuse as soon as well known drug pushers were released from prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda authorities have informed me that the level of drug abuse at any particular time in any particular place may be influenced by a number of factors. As a general rule it is not possible to attribute an increase in the incidence of drug abuse specifically to the release from prison of persons convicted of drug trafficking offences.

The Garda authorities are, of course, conscious of the part such person can play in drug trafficking and take all steps open to them to curb this problem.
