Vol. 373 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

75.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason disability benefit was not paid from 25 May 1987 to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11.

Payment of disability benefit to the person concerned was disallowed from 25 May 1987 following examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that she was capable of work.

As soon as the letter of appeal, referred to by the Deputy in details supplied with the question, arrives in the Department, arrangements will be made to have her examined by another medical referee in the near future.

Her claim to benefit will be reviewed in light of the medical referee's report.

76.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when the appeal of a person (details supplied) in County Cork against the decision to discontinue disability benefit to him will be heard.

The person concerned was paid disability benefit to 26 January 1987 after which date payment was disallowed following an examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that he was capable of work.

He appealed against the disallowance and arrangements were made to have him examined by a different medical referee on 5 May 1987 but the claimant did not attend.

Arrangements have again been made to have him examined by a different medical referee as soon as possible. His entitlement to benefit will then be reviewed in the light of the medical referee's report.

77.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when an invalidity pension will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person concerned has been awarded invalidity pension from 9 April 1987. There is a general renewal of pension order books for all pensioners in progress at the moment and when this is completed, a pension order book payable from 23 July 1987 will be issued for the person concerned to the designated post office of payment. Arrears in respect of the period from 9 April 1987 to 22 July 1987, less the amount of disability benefit paid during that period will be paid by payable order.

78.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when arrears of disability benefit for the period 12 January 1987 to 10 February 1987 will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary.

The person concerned claimed disability benefit from 26 January 1987 to 31 January 1987 after which date he was certified fit to resume work. Benefit was authorised from 29 January 1987, the fourth day of incapacity and payment was issued at the weekly rate of £41.10, the maximum rate appropriate to a married man who does not claim an adult dependant allowance.

The person concerned again claimed disability benefit from 2 February 1987. However, as no further medical certificates were received payment could not issue. He has been requested to forward a statement from his employer indicating the dates of his absence from work. On receipt of this, any arrears of benefit outstanding will be issued.

79.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if payment of a free electricity allowance will be made to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick who is in receipt of an invalidity pension.

One of the conditions for receipt of a free electricity allowance is that an eligible person must be living alone or only with persons who come within certain excepted categories.

The person concerned is residing with his son who does not come within the excepted categories for satisfying the living alone condition of the scheme. His application for the allowance had, therefore, to be refused. He was notified accordingly on 21 May 1987.
