Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - Post-Primary Course Committees.

220.

asked the Minister for Education the composition of post-primary course committees; the levels of expenses available to the different categories of persons involved in such committees including substitution arrangements where these exist.

The composition of post-primary courses committees established under the interim Curriculum and Examination Board is as follows:

Junior Cycle: Joint Management Body (Voluntary Schools), two representatives; Irish Vocational Education Association, one representative; Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland, one representative; Teachers' Union of Ireland, one representative; Subject Association, one representative; Department of Education, two representatives; two-three nominees of the board with specialist expertise including where appropriate expertise in primary education.

Senior Cycle: As above with the following additions: National University of Ireland, one representative; University of Dublin, Trinity College, one representative.

Travel and subsistence allowances are paid to all members in accordance with the terms and rates applicable in the Civil Service.

As regards to primary and post-primary school teachers who may be members of these committees, substitution arrangements are a matter for individual teachers and their school authorities. My Department's regulations do not, in the normal course, provide for paid substitution in respect of occassional brief absence of teachers from school duties such as attendance at meetings of these course committees.
