Vol. 373 No. 6

Written Answers. - Science Subjects.

14.

asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, she has taken or intends to take to ensure that science subjects will get more attention as promised in the Programme for National Recovery published before the general election of February, 1987.

I am at present examining the scope that exists for giving more attention to science subjects. In this context I am reviewing recent initiatives in this area. These include a pilot project to encourage the study of physics and chemistry in girls' schools and a requirement that an adequate course of laboratory work be done as part of the leaving certificate course in physics or chemistry. I intend to encourage such initiatives and to strengthen them where necessary.

The Deputy will be aware that the Government have appointed a Minister of State for Science and Technology as an earnest of their commitment to this essential area.
