Vol. 373 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dargle River Flooding.

75.

asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has for the provision of £1.9 million to carry out the works recommended by the consulting engineers on the Dargle river to make it safe for the residents of Little Bray, County Wicklow, who suffered such hardship from the disastrous flooding of the river on the night of 25-26 August 1986.

76.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself that an adequate early warning system and contingency plan has been put in place by the Bray local authority in case of any further severe flooding of the Dargle river.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 75 and 76 together.

Preliminary proposals have been received from Bray Urban District Council for the River Dargle flood protection scheme; further information in relation to the proposals is awaited from the council. Local arrangements for dealing with major emergencies enable Wicklow County Council's and Bray Urban District Council's services to be altered on a round-the-clock basis. In addition, Wicklow County Council's emergency plan is at present being reviewed locally to ensure that it adequately meets local requirements.
