Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Frozen Peas Imports.

77.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food in view of the large stocks, over 1,000 tons, of Irish frozen green peas in Midleton cold store, County Cork, the action, if any, he proposes to take to stop the current wave of dumping of frozen peas from overseas, including Guatemala, at prices well below production cost; and if he will safeguard the interests of growers and processors in the Cork area.

High level production of peas in Europe in 1986 gave rise to considerably reduced prices, particularly in Britain, with consequent pressure on the market. The question of taking protective measures against imports from Third countries is primarily a matter for the EC. There is no evidence available of dumping of peas from Third countries which would support a case to the EC Commission for possible protective measures.
