Vol. 373 No. 10

Written Answers. - Arrest of Women.

21.

asked the Minister for Justice if any inquiry has been initiated into the circumstances of the arrest and detention of 28 members of Women for Disarmament, during the course of a visit to this country in 1984 by President Reagan; if, following the settlement of their claim for compensation, any disciplinary proceedings have been instituted against those responsible for the arrests; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware, it is open to any person who claims to have been wrongfully or unreasonably arrested to pursue the matter through the courts and action of this nature was in fact taken in this case. As the matter has now been disposed of in that way, I do not propose, at this stage, to comment further on the matter.

Under the Garda Síochána Discipline Regulations, questions of disciplinary proceedings are matters for the Garda authorities. I am informed by the Commissioner that no such proceedings have been instituted.
