asked the Minister for Justice the total number of persons committed to prison during 1986 for (a) the non-payment of debt, and (b) the non-payment of fines; and in respect of (a) and (b) the average period of the committal and average amount of the debt or fine.

Two hundred and twenty two persons were committed to prison during 1986 for non-payment of debt and 1,006 were committed for non-payment of fines.

Thirty seven days was the average period of committal in respect of non-payment of debt and 40 days was the average period for the non-payment of fines.

One thousand four hundred and fifty punts was the average amount in respect of each committal for non-payment of debt. The corresponding figure for non-payment of fines was IR£238.
