Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Financial Support for Agriculture.

43.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the amount of non-common agricultural policy agricultural support by the member state Governments of the EC; and the common agricultural policy support to each member state Government.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the Exchequer support for agriculture in the most recent year for which figures are available, as against the support from the common agricultural policy; and if he will give a breakdown on this support.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 43 and 45 together. Expenditure on agriculture by my Department in 1986 totalled some £1.581 million. A breakdown of this expenditure by source of funding is as follows:

£m

Voted expenditure

385

EC FEOGA Fund

616

Borrowings (for market intervention purchases

567

Total

1,568

Comparable details of national support for agriculture by other member states are not available but the following are particulars as given by the EC Commissioon of support from the FEOGA Fund in 1986 to each member state.

Million ECU

Belgium

998

Denmark

1,088

Germany

4,510

Greece

1,476

Spain

271

France

5,636

Ireland

1,280

Italy

3,241

Luxembourg

4

Netherlands

2,296

Portugal

31

United Kingdom

2,076

The figure of 1,280 million ECUs for Ireland does not match the £616 million given above as it includes payments not made through my Department or made to the Department and already allowed for in the sums of £385 million and £567 million shown.
